The Flying Dream Video (etc.)

Here is the video that started this blog. It is a stop-motion animation of my song Flying Dream, as it moves in harmonic space. It’s a preview of what the blog is all about. Red = bass, yellow = melody, and orange = the harmonies.

Be Love is the second full song video I did. While Flying Dream is all over the lattice, Be Love occupies a small space, moving left and right between Major and Mixolydian modes.

Real Girl lives in the lower right quadrant, minor and dominant.

I’m posting these again so they will be close to the top of the front page. Anjalisa Aitken and The Harmony People have come into my life, and I’m shifting my focus from study and writing to performing and creativity.

I think I’ve pretty well said what I have to say about the lattice for now. The videos are explained, and I’ve brought you pretty much up to speed with my lattice explorations so far. I’ll still be learning, and I’ll keep you posted, but I’m content with this particular yearlong blurt. Time to get out there and put all this cool stuff to use!

There is plenty to find here. A random approach might work best — find a recent article that catches your eye, click links to go deeper, and use the back button to get back up the chain. I’m especially fond of the posts in the Septimal Harmony category.

Enjoy, I’ll be back. Contact with fellow lattice-heads is welcome.

PS I have other presences on the Web. Here are some links:

Be Love at Sacred Grounds

I love open mics. I have two favorites in San Francisco that I make every time I’m in town — Hotel Utah on Mondays, and Sacred Grounds on Thursdays.

It is in places like Sacred Grounds that the culture begins, where it wells up right from the ground, not manufactured or corporate or in service of any agenda but the beauty of human creativity.

Last week I sang Be Love at Sacred Grounds, and my dear friend Claudia took a video. Here it is. I hope you enjoy it. It really gets the flavor of the place.

Real Girl for Real

A few weeks ago, I unexpectedly recorded a charming version of Real Girl. I’d been plugging away at the song all afternoon, taking videos to watch and critique, when my housemate walked in. She and I always make each other laugh, no matter what is going on. I don’t know why, we just look at each other and laugh.

So when Joey came home, I knew it’d be a fun take. I added harmony vocals, bass and guitar.

I’m pleased with this video, and I think I’ll do more. Also planning more lattice stuff soon.

Bug Zapper

More fun with the Q2HD. Bug Zapper is a co-write with my friend Scott Bryson. I’ve reworked it endlessly, and this is where it sits right now. For years, there’s been a major II chord in the chorus, clinging like the kitten in the “Hang in there, Baby” poster. I finally got over it and went to good old V-IV-I.

A Performance Video

Mr. Natural, by the great R. Crumb

Mr. Natural, by the great R. Crumb

Sacred Grounds Cafe in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood has had an open mic of some sort since the late 60’s. In its current incarnation, it’s hosted, every Thursday, by local music teacher and multi-instrumentalist Mr. Natural, who thoroughly looks the part!

There’s a fun crowd of regulars and it’s a warm, accepting and inviting atmosphere. Every level of player shows up, from first-time-on-stage virgins (who are greeted with great enthusiasm) to seasoned veterans.

Every week, there’s a featured performer who gets to play a 45-minute set. Mr. Natural records a video of every show, and posts it to YouTube on his channel.

I played the feature this past March 7. I extracted my set from the full video and posted it on my own channel.

It’s a good way to inaugurate my Performance Video page. Enjoy!
